Qinhuai River is a famous resort in Nanjing. One of its ancient names is Huaishui; another name is Longcangpu. There are numerous legends and records about Qinhuai River in the history. It's said Qinshihuang Emperor had taken the purple gas flowing above Jinlin city for lucky gas of authority when he paid a visit to the east, therefore, he had issued the order to remove Fang Mountain and change the river way of Changlong River toward the Changjiang River; the descendants took this riverway was constructed in Qin Dynasty and named it as Qinhuai. Qinhuai River, a branch of the Changjiang River, is the largest river in Nanjing area. There are two sources for Qinhuai River including the northern one and the southern one. The northern source, located in Nanlu, Baohuashan Mountain, Jurong City, is named Jurong River; the southern one, located in Donglu Mountain, Lishui County, is named Lishui River. The segment between the eastern and the southern passes which is flowing in the city is crowned as ten-mile-long Qinhuai(shili Qinhuai) and the gold powder of six dynasties(Liuchao Jinfen). There are over 100 markets of different scales along Qinhuai River. It's bustling and busy shopping center and residential area since the East Wu Dynasty. From dynasty to dynasty, many high officials and the wealthy, including Wang Dao and Xie An in the East Jin Dynasty, lived on the bank of Qinhuai River. The most famous sight of Qinhuai is the floating light vessels which were popular in the Ming Dynasty. There were fancy lanterns hanging in every vessel on the river, no matter what size it was. The light vessels were the most popular choice for traveling on Qinhuai River. Qinhuai River scenic belt, centralized by Confucius Temple in Nanjing and linked by Qinhuai River, including Zhan Garden, Confucius Temple ancient architectural complex, Egret Islet, castle of Zhonghua Gate as well as vessels and sights along the upstream from Yaoyedu crossing to Zhenhuai Bridge, constitute a scenic area characterized with places of interest, gardens, painted pleasure boats, shopping centers, houses with river-view and folk customs.
